The Dan The D (AKA Dan Donovan)

The Dan The D aka Dan Donovan is a singer-songwriter and master of gritty rock that conjures upimages of Iggy Pop and Tom Waits. As an artist he is a man on a singular mission combining elements of rockabilly with stoner, whiskey infused rock’n’rolland alt blues – all mashed together in an undeniably brilliant fashion.

Unique and full to bursting with a fuzzy sense of identity, passion and desire.

In the late eighties Dan was invited to record a live session at the famous BBC Maida Vale studio with his then band the grungy rock Tribe of Dan. Much press, radio play, international touring and an album followed but in 1992 Dan folded the outfit to pursue a more intimate genre, embracing a stripped down sound inspired by his fondness for Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.

During the following years he recorded a number of albums. Acclaimed in the press.

“earthy, moody... crafted by candlelight” KerrangKKKK
             “highly atmospheric” Raw Mag
“visionary Dan the snarling moaning man” NME
             “Funky, sinister and impenetrable” MOJO

Since 2005 Dan performed and recording as King Kool, a two piece garage rock outfit. With 4 albums from this project under his belt he then returned embracing his solo roots. A new album in 2016 featuring 12 songs from his 12 albums emerged and was a retrospective project with gritty blues, folk renditions from his back catalogue.

Summer 2017 Dan was invited to record at the infamous Rancho de la Luna, Joshua Tree, California. Accompanied by Jonny Quinn (Snow Patrol) on drums and Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal/QOTSA) this unlikely combo offered new twists that complimented Donovan’s punkygarage swamp offering titled Mojo del Rancho.

Locked in for the best part of 2 years as was the rest of the world Dan wasn’t idle and recorded a new album from his Fenland hide out. Bat Beats Dan’s latest was released in ‘21.
‘Captivating on the first listen, increasingly addictive thereon’ The RingMaster.
